Later Light. Early Dark.

Scripture

“We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. Then the way you live will always honour and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better. We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light.” (Colossians 1:9-12 NLT)

Later Light. Early Dark

The quick click of the automatic light switch turning on our front door lights startled me at its timing. The Blue Jays game had barely begun, and the diminished daylight tripped the switch before 7:30 a few nights ago. It’s dark when I get up and the sun’s low on the drive home.

Summer ended on Saturday, the fields are nearly empty of their harvest, the leaves are turning in our area, and we recognize the chill in the breeze on a sunny day. I’m in a particular season of life as are you, and they are different in their owns ways. Playing golf with my next-door neighbour recently, he suggested I play from the tees forward from his. He’s 20 years my junior and had moved forward when he plays with his adult sons, and he thought the same leveling would happen for us.

We are playing the same golf course, the same greens and bunkers but playing according to our age and stage. But we are still playing the same game. We are all at different ages and stages of life but even when our capacities are different, we can still play it together.

The seasons come and go but they don’t confine our inner beings. We can love God and our neighbour however energized or weary we may be. Seasons of harvest lead to the next season of rich harvest. And the Good God dwells in our inner person with kindness and hope.

A Prayer for Today

God of kindness who shares the seasons of nature and life with the grateful and ungrateful help us live close to you as we worry for those who are ill, hope for those who are thriving and striving and love all that come across our path. Help us to seek your true joy, the joy in giving without expectation of return …. For Jesus’ sake
