Super Blue Moon
/Scripture
“For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. He received honour and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’ We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain. We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.” (2Peter 1:16-19 NIVUK)
Super Blue Moon
Did you head out in the dark of night to see the Super Blue Moon on August 30th? Not only was it the second full moon in the month (the proverbial blue moon) but the moon was closer to earth in its orbit making it appear brighter and larger.
The next one doesn’t occur until 2037 so I was grateful for the greater experience and knowledge of astronomers to alert us to experience this- it would occur whether I was paying attention or not.
Peter the Apostle is a bit of a spiritual astronomer and out of his storehouse of experience and knowledge alerts us to the Morning Star that can bring light and wisdom to our inner journey. God knows we need light in the confusing darkness that seems so prevalent in our lives.
In his life with Jesus he had a once-in-a-lifetime experience when Jesus was transformed into a light as bright as the sun for a brief period. Peter experienced not only that, but his own failures and then his own transformation when Jesus appeared to him after his resurrection.
In his wise older age Peter encourages us to pay attention to what he has to say about Jesus and his transformational power for our daily grind. Peter tells us that light shines in the daily grind as we live in hopeful anticipation of the Morning Star rising fully in our hearts.
A Prayer for Today
Loving God, you know we need all the light we can get as we navigate all the tensions and pressures of daily life. Help us see the mystery in the mundane, the joy amidst the tears, the hope in the midst of anxiety, the comfort in sorrow. Help us to pay attention to the hints of your presence in life and be persons of hope and faith in a challenging world …. For Jesus’ sake
