A Shock to the System

Scripture
“To you who are ready for the truth, I say this: Love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the supple moves of prayer for that person. …. Live generously…. “Here is a simple rule of thumb for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you; then grab the initiative and do it for them! …. Live out this God-created identity the way our Father lives toward us, generously and graciously, even when we’re at our worst. Our Father is kind; you be kind. (Luke 6:27,31,36 MSG)
A Shock to the System
The first day of Fall (the 22nd) landed like brick on a window in our neighbourhood - wind, rain, plummeting temperatures, leaves blowing off trees which let us know something had changed. It sharpens our senses and is a bit of a wakeup call to get ready for what comes next.
We can too easily be lulled into a false sense of security and get unpleasantly surprised by the inevitable consequences of our actions. The other day after taking great care in a 40 km/hour zone I entered an 80 km/hr zone without being as careful with my acceleration. I quickly noticed the flashing lights of a seller of tickets to the Policeman’s Ball. I’ve sent my RSVP and entered appropriate negotiations.
I was embarrassed because it’s been a long time since my last ticket, but I had become less careful, and my foot got heavier on the accelerator. At least this carelessness will only cost money, not damage to anyone else.
When it comes to kindness, justice, mercy and forgiveness we need regular sharpening of our senses and for me that is paying attention to Jesus’ life and words. Quiet reflection on his goodness inspires and empowers us to imitate him and not be embarrassed by missing signposts that warn us.
A Prayer for Today
O God we give thanks for your kindness and mercy to us, even when we aren’t at our best – especially when we are not at our best. Forgive us for missing your simple challenges to love, forgive, and treat others as well as we would want to be treated. Forgive our missing you in each one who comes across our path …. For Jesus’ sake
