Fall Back – Light Up
/November 2, 2020
Scripture
“No one lights a lamp, then hides it in a drawer. It’s put on a lamp stand so those entering the room have light to see where they’re going. Your eye is a lamp, lighting up your whole body. If you live wide-eyed in wonder and belief, your body fills up with light. If you live squinty-eyed in greed and distrust, your body is a dank cellar. Keep your eyes open, your lamp burning, so you don’t get musty and murky. Keep your life as well-lighted as your best-lighted room.” (Luke 11:33-36 MSG)
Fall Back – Light Up
In the wee hours of Sunday morning the “Fall Back” time fairy changed our clocks. You feeling slightly off? Or not happy about the decreasing daylight each day or wondering what restrictions our lives will experience over the uncertain days ahead?
When I paired “Light Up” with “Fall Back” you may have thought “I hope he means a candle and not a cigar.” Your hope would be confirmed because I do feel the need for light in the murky days we are in. It’s been cloudy, rainy – “dreich” as my Scottish friends would say.
The darker it is the brighter shines the light. We need to shine light in our inner person, our imagination, our soul to see the world realistically but with faith and hope. For me it is taking a few moments of stillness and silence, listening to some words from Jesus’ life and opening my life to the gentle love of God.
For you it may be listening to a quiet bit of music and offering a prayer for the needs of the world, asking for help from the God who sees and hears us – who has chosen to be with us in Jesus. Whatever it is, let’s shine inwardly and live generously.
A Prayer for Today
Almighty God, in whom we live and move and have our being, you have made us for yourself, so that our hearts are restless until they rest in you; grant us purity of heart and strength of purpose, that no selfish passion may hinder us from knowing your will, no weakness from doing it; but that in your light we may see light clearly, and in your service find our perfect freedom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Augustine: 354-430)
