Some Summer Prayers
A PRAYER FOR VACATION
Blessing of discovery be yours and blessing of rest.
Blessing of scenery be yours and blessing of sleep.
Blessing of meeting be yours and blessing of solitude.
Blessing of fun be yours and blessing of thought.
Blessing of change be yours and blessing of homecoming.
(From Celtic Prayers For Life Today. Ray Simpson)
A CALL TO PRAY
May my conversations be significant,
May my meetings be blessed,
May my path cross the paths of others
who love You.
May my path cross the paths of others
who don’t know You.
May my touch be Tour touch of infinite gentleness,
May my words be Your words of wisdom,
May my eyes see with Your compassion.
(Life Journey Mary Fleeson, Eagle)
FREINDSHIP WITH CHRIST
Christ on the cross bows his head,
Waiting for you,
That he may kiss you,
His arms are outstretched,
That he may embrace you,
His hands are open,
That he may enrich you,
His body spread out,
That he may give himself totally,
His feet are nailed,
That he may stay there,
His side is open for you,
That he may let you enter there.
(Bonaventure Soliloquy in Franciscan Prayer by Ilia Delio,
St. Anthony Messenger Press)
FROM THOMAS MERTON
This is what it means to seek God perfectly:
to withdraw
from illusion and pleasure,
from worldly anxieties and desires,
from the works that God does not want,
from a glory that is only human display;
to keep my mind free from confusion in order that
my liberty may be always at the disposal of His will;
to entertain silence in my heart and listen for the
voice of God. And then to wait in peace and emptiness and oblivion
of all things.
(New Seeds of Contemplation)
A PRAYER FOR PERSPECTIVE
Creator of the Universe
Preserve us from our own presumption.
Do not let us close ourselves into ourselves
But open us continually into you.
Let us be more in love with You
than with our notions of You.
Let us stop claiming to know everything
so that we may understand something.
Increase in us kindness,
Make us people who care
who venerate the truth
and recognize each other.
Draw us with an irresistible beauty.
(Rabia Terri Harris Prayers for a Thousand Years)
