Some Summer Reading Suggestions
Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church N.T. Wright HarperCollins Canada
Wright gently and often amusingly helps us understand that Jesus’ resurrection focuses our lives on justice, beauty and good news. Thoughtful and enriching reading.
The Shack by William P. Young H.B. Fenn & Company
In spite of this becoming a bit of a phenomenon I still recommend it as a light read which stretches our understanding of God. The book never shies away from the toughest issues about justice, “where is God in tragedy?” forgiveness and depression. As an allegory it is okay but as a reflection on tough issues around loss and redemption is excellent.
Same Kind Of Different As Me: A Modern-day Slave, An International Art Dealer, And The Unlikely Woman Who Bound Them Together by Ron Hall and Denver Moore Thomas Nelson Publishers
This is a wonderful exploration of friendship between unlikely prospects from very different racial, cultural and economic backgrounds. It made me laugh, made me weep and made me think.
A Secular Age Charles Taylor Belknap Press
Taylor is one of Canada’s great thinkers about faith and philosophy. This book is long and challenging but opens up a wonderful road to understanding how we have arrived at the place where faith is largely excluded from the public square. It allows us to take courage for the future and challenges us to engage culture thoughtfully. Taylor helps us take responsibility for the place we are in rather than just rage against what threatens us.
